Food business registration

Guidance and how to apply to register a new food business or change an existing one.

New food businesses must register with their Local Authority 28 days before starting business. This is set in the Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs, Article 6(2).

You must also tell us if there are any major changes or if a place closes. This is to make sure that we always have the most up-to-date information.

Some businesses need to meet higher standards (see: Approved premises for food), if they deal with:

  • Meat;
  • meat products;
  • dairy products;
  • or fish products from the raw state.
