Current driver requirements
- An Advanced Driving Test. Note: This must done Kirklees Council and not by approved suppliers. To book, visit: Taxi practical tests (Kirklees Council).
- A practical wheelchair course. (For all drivers of wheelchair accessible vehicles).
- In possession of a Level 1 English taught qualification. If you cannot provide proof of this, new applicants must sit a test. The level of this test is "English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Entry 3" and covers speaking, listening and reading.
- The test is carried out by Phoenix Solutions.

- Please note: There is a fee of £85 payable upon booking.
- Resit fees for any part that is not passed:
- Speaking: £25.
- Listening: £25.
- Reading: £35.
- Local Knowledge test if you apply for Hackney Carriage or Dual Badge. This is a written test to show an applicant's knowledge of:
- The Calderdale area.
- Conditions that relate to the Hackney Carriage/Private Hire driver's licence conditions.
- There are no materials given to applicants to help them with this test. It is a test that needs a basic knowledge of the local area and conditions. (These can be found in the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy.) It is multiple choice and applicants must get 80% to pass.
- Knowledge Test can be booked via Phoenix Solutions. Email your name and phone number to: calderdale@taxitesthub.co.uk. (Please note: There is charge of £35.)
- If a resit test is needed, there will be a fee of £35.
- Attend the Professional Standards Training after you finish all other requirements. (This was paused during the pandemic and is currently under review. Applicants will be expected to carry out the training prior to licence renewal).
- Confirm you have read and understand your Tax Responsibilities. If you do not confirm that you are aware of the guidance, you will not be issued with a licence.
Apply
You must supply us with evidence that you are a "fit and proper" person to hold a driver's licence.
Please note: If your DBS shows convictions, cautions or other relevant information, we may want to interview you. A final decision will only be made after this has been done.
If there are concerns about a driver's conduct
- We will investigate the driver under the terms of section 61(1) of the Local Government Act 1976.)
- If we believe the driver is no longer a fit and proper person, their licence can be suspended or revoked.
We will book you on the Professional Standards training session when you have completed all the requirements.
