Halifax Household Waste Recycling Centre

Lee Bank, Ovenden Road, Halifax, HX3 5PN

Calderdale residents can use HWRCs to deposit items that do not fit in the domestic wheelie bin or bin liners. Important note: You must bring and show some identification that proves you are a resident.

Separate skips are provided for cardboard, plastic bottles, tubs and trays, timber, electrical items, green waste and such. Sort your waste before your visit and placing materials in the correct skip. This helps to make sure that the maximum amount is recovered.

The service is free to use. Please ensure you have time to deposit your waste and exit the site, before the closure time.

Vehicle height restrictions are in place at this site. There is a 5 foot 11 inch (1.8 metres) height barrier. Please note: Vehicles above this height limit will be turned away, unless you have a permit.

Note: The Council operates a commercial vehicle permit scheme. If you use a van, pick-up or a vehicle with a large trailer, you will need a permit.

What to take

  • Asbestos: This is a hazardous material. Only small amounts up to a maximum of eight sheets or 200kg in total can be accepted.

    • from Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm.
    • By appointment only at the designated asbestos container at Halifax Waste Transfer Station (Halifax HWRC).
    • Please note: 24 hours notice is required.
    • To book, phone: 01422 417720.

For larger amounts, commercial asbestos contractor must be used. These can be found on the Internet, just search for 'commercial asbestos strippers'.

Only Calderdale residents can dispose of their asbestos at the HWRC. Upon arrival you will need to show a Council tax bill as proof of residency. Residents are required to carry their own waste. If another person or builder carries the asbestos, it then becomes trade waste. This requires a waste carrier's license and delivery to an alternative licensed facility. We do NOT accept trade waste at the HWRC.

Site staff are NOT able to help unload or lift asbestos. Please make sure all packages are manageable enough to lift into the designated container yourself.

All asbestos must be double wrapped in thick polythene or Visqueen. Then seal it with strong, all-weather tape to keep it secure and avoid dust release when handling.

Only cement bonded asbestos products will be accepted (grey colour). Typically the materials will be asbestos roofing, sheeting from garages and fall pipes. We do NOT accept any blue, brown or white (fibrous) asbestos. This requires a specialist contractor found on the Internet.

When handling asbestos, we advise you to wear suitable clothing and protective footwear. Such as overalls with elasticated wrists and ankles, head protection, dust masks, goggles and gloves. All these can then be disposed of as asbestos waste afterwards. Thoroughly wet the asbestos with clean water before handling. Avoid breaking up the asbestos.

  • Bricks and rubble: You can bring small amounts of up to two rubble sacks (20kg capacity). This is the maximum allowed per visit and you can only visit once per week. This is in line with the Government's guidance.
Please note: You must bring and show some identification that proves you are a Calderdale resident. No trade waste.

  • Car batteries
  • Cardboard: Please remove any plastic and polystyrene packaging and flatten the box before disposal.
