Some countries require a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) before a marriage or civil partnership can take place.
Check with the local authority where you plan to marry or form a civil partnership to confirm what’s needed.
For more details, visit Getting married or registering a civil partnership abroad (GOV.UK).
How to get a CNI
You must give notice at the register office in the district where you live.
Before booking, you must know:
- the exact name of your ceremony venue, as it must appear on your notice
- how long the CNI is valid in the country where your ceremony will take place.
Important:
- If any details change after your appointment, you must give notice again and pay a new fee.
- We can only accept notice for a CNI if you are over 18 and a British citizen.
