We sweep all roads on a recurring basis. In autumn/winter, we aim to make sure that areas vulnerable to surface water flooding are kept free of fallen leaves. This is so the gullies and drains do not get blocked. At these times we bring in extra resources and focus attention on removing leaves and other detritus as quickly as possible.
We also try to keep high footfall areas, such as town centres and main pedestrian routes, free of leaves.
This work depends on the weather.
- At times, leaves fall steadily, so that we can keep up with the work.
- Other times, large amounts of leaves fall very quickly across the whole Borough, which is a major challenge. This happens more after storms or strong winds.
Before you report 'blocked' drainage and gullies, please help us:
- Check they are not just covered with leaves that can easily be removed with a sweeping brush. This will allow water to flow through, rather than over, them.
- We call these 'blinded' gullies.
- Only remove the leaves if you are fit enough to do so and it is safe to do it. This will allow us to concentrate our gully wagons where they are most needed.
