Climate Action Plan annual review - year one

Overview

Celebrating a year of climate action: Chair’s opening statement

It’s now one year since Calderdale’s first Climate Action Plan was launched. More than 3,000 people have viewed this plan online, and copies are in libraries across the borough.

If you haven’t had a chance to read our Climate Action Plan yet, please take a look. It includes climate action basics like what you can do today and lots of case studies. It also explains terms like climate risk and climate justice. We use ‘we’ and ‘our’ throughout the plan and in this review when we refer to actions. ‘We’ refers to all of us in the borough of Calderdale.

This annual report highlights some amazing work happening across the borough and what we will do next. There’s so much to celebrate. From the planting of a new sustainable urban drainage garden to Indian dancing to raise awareness about climate change. We are seeing community-led retrofit, e-bikes zooming up hills, and the sphagnum moss project.

Climate action has never been more visible or more needed. Global carbon emissions are still far too high. We must take action to increase our resilience to a changing climate. We must also speed up work to reduce pollution created here, in Calderdale.

In 2024, we were awarded the prestigious Municipal Journal Award for Climate Leadership. This reflects our climate work. We also agreed on our first Climate Influencing Strategy, which focuses on where we most urgently need help. We will be taking it to our MPs. The whole Climate Action Partnership is helping to amplify messages in West Yorkshire and beyond.

In 2025, we will continue to put our all into working together to achieve our ambition. We welcome you on this journey. Let’s continue to inspire and commend each other. We are creating a healthier, greener, and fairer Calderdale.
