Transport is responsible for a large portion of Calderdale’s direct carbon pollution (41%). This statistic is from our Calderdale Emission Reduction Pathways report.
Road traffic also causes air quality issues. Creating ways for people to walk and cycle and improving public transport delivers massive health benefits.
- We have published an award-winning placemaking and design guide focusing on green and healthy streets.
- The Influencing Strategy outlines the actions we need West Yorkshire Combined Authority and other partners to take. Calderdale is not in direct control of bus or rail systems, so how we work with others is important.
- We’ve strengthened our partnership working. Community Rail Association, Accessible Calderdale Disability Access Forum, the NHS and Juiced Up Bikes have joined our Transport working group.
- Eye on Calderdale and Slow the Flow continue to engage the community on climate resilience. Telling people how to report blocked highway drains and promoting funding for trees and sustainable drainage.

Our priorities for the next year
Help communities design and finalise a Calderdale Active Travel Network Improvement Plan. This will power future funding bids. It will be used to update Council policies on walking and cycling.
We also intend to move forward with ideas for Shared Transport Hubs. We will work together with the Green Economy group to reach more businesses.

Case study – Halifax Bus Station
Halifax Bus Station opened in 2024. It’s a clean, modern, welcoming space. Bus users can access buses from 19 stands and easily switch between bus routes.
The building has cycle parking, Wi-Fi and many green features. Have you noticed the green roof covered in bee-friendly plants? If you know where to look, you will also spot solar panels.
