Climate Action Plan annual review - year one

Warm and resilient buildings

Improving energy efficiency by upgrading existing buildings plays a big role in reaching net zero. Latest data shows that over 75,000 homes in Calderdale will need some upgrading to meet local targets. Figure taken from Calderdale Local Area Energy Plan

  • The Calderdale Council Street Demonstrator project will test a whole street approach to fabric retrofit of solid wall houses. It will provide important learning to help us scale up action across the borough.
  • Work is underway to develop a Fair Retrofit Strategy. This will reduce carbon emissions from buildings, making them warmer and more resilient. The strategy will set future goals and use the Calderdale Local Area Energy Plan.
  • Calderdale’s Retrofit Challenge project, funded by Innovate UK aims to improve the customer journey in solid wall retrofit. It will also offer important learning.
  • A large-scale pilot will be brought forward as part of the retrofit strategy.
  • Further action is needed to agree on the best approach to retrofit residential, commercial and industrial buildings. Part of this means that we also need to talk about what funding we can attract.

Our priorities for the next year

To develop a Fair Retrofit Strategy and an Investment Strategy for Calderdale covering all building types and owners.

Case study: External wall insulation in Illingworth

Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund provided 68 flats in Illingworth, with an extra 100mm of external wall insulation.

Results show the energy performance ratings (EPC) for each flat have been lifted. They have changed from EPC rating D to at least a C. As a result, this achieves carbon savings of around 1 tonne (CO2e) per year. This is an average fuel bill saving of £169 per year. Together Housing organised this work, which was carried out by Sustainable Building Services.
