Celebrating a year of climate action: Chair’s opening statement
It’s been two years since Calderdale launched its first Climate Action Plan. Our plan was created by experts and community members working together. When we talk about actions in this plan and review, 'we' and 'our' means everyone in Calderdale. We all share the hope for a better future, whether that's:
• A warmer home.
• Better buses.
• Increased flood protection.
• More green spaces to enjoy.
Climate action can help make this happen.
The work happening in Calderdale continues to inspire me. This year, I met an enterprising business leader. He says he is “driving on sunbeams” because his car is powered by the solar panels on his factory roof. I also listened to members of the Calderdale Citizens’ Jury on Retrofit. Stone buildings are part of our heritage, but can be cold, drafty, and expensive to heat. The creative ideas from the Citizens’ Jury will help to make retrofitting easier for 75,000 older homes in Calderdale.
In November, the award-winning Calderdale Sphagnum Moss project celebrated its success. Sphagnum Moss is a small plant that’s easy to miss, but it’s very important. It can grow in harsh conditions and repair damaged ecosystems. This project shows how we must care for where we live and create the right conditions for everyone to succeed.
Globally, carbon emissions are still too high. We need to keep moving towards a green economy. This will help us cut down on our use of expensive imported fossil fuels. It will also create more local green jobs and opportunities.
In 2026, we will continue to focus on being kind and welcoming. We’ll build our networks, grow our influence, and support each other.
Together, we can create a healthier, greener, and fairer Calderdale.
