Climate Action Plan annual review - year two

Community climate action

Examples of amazing community climate action can be seen throughout Calderdale. We want to continue being inspired by this action, celebrating it, and helping it to grow. Joined up thinking and action at the community level can help to make sure that everyone’s voices are heard.

Highlights

  • We have engaged key partners in developing the first neighbourhood climate action plans. The plans will focus on Park Ward, North Halifax and Old Town.
  • The theme group is a great place for sharing and supporting community-led action taking place across Calderdale.

Challenges

  • Finding the money, time and people needed to deliver actions.
  • Getting local charities and community groups involved takes time. We need to explain why this work matters and how it helps.

How we are doing

Our priorities for next year

We will work with the community to create neighbourhood climate action plans. These plans will then help to prioritise future actions. Funding is needed to support this work.

Case study: The rise of Repair Cafes

Five Repair Cafes, plus Todmorden Makery, are now running successfully in Calderdale: Heptonstall, Mytholmroyd, Skircoat, Elland and Shelf. Visitors bring in a range of items, including clothing, electricals, furniture, and bikes. Skilled volunteers do their best to fix them or give advice. The cafes offer a warm welcoming space and provide refreshments, all for a donation. They help to connect local people, share skills and create a culture where repairing is normal.
