We want all Calderdale residents to live in warm, healthy homes that are protected from rising energy prices. Our aim is to upgrade over 75,000 homes in Calderdale. To support this, we’re working with partners to build systems that offer local advice, funding, and training.
Highlights
- We have developed a Retrofit Strategy. It sets out our main actions for the next five years and will guide new projects.
- A new group has been formed to lead projects in target locations, as identified in our Local Area Energy Plan.
- From delivering pilot projects (e.g. the street demonstrator), we have learned how to engage with residents. As well as the importance of doing so effectively.
Challenges
- Due to demand, connecting heat pumps and solar panels with battery storage to the energy network is a challenge. This slows the rate of investment and change.

Our priorities for next year:
We will be working to roll out projects, starting with the neighbourhoods that need help the most. We will look at ways to upgrade commercial buildings. We will continue to engage the community and help them to benefit from local energy projects.
Case study: Solar panel & battery scheme with Octopus Energy
Together Housing and Octopus Energy have created a new energy deal – ‘Tenant Power.’ This gives people cheaper electricity if they agree to have solar panels and battery storage fitted in their homes. This scheme:
- Uses renewable energy.
- Brings in money over time to pay for the upgrades.
- Cuts carbon and saves residents money!
