Countryside Plant Sanctuary and Sphagnum Moss Project Volunteer

Working with volunteers to find the best way to grow plants that are rare or are essential to restore damaged habitats in Calderdale.

Why volunteer

  • Do you want to make Calderdale countryside more species rich for our struggling wildlife?
  • Are you concerned about flooding in the valley and want to make our landscapes more water resilient?
  • Do you worry about the climate emergency and want to help local landscapes store atmospheric carbon?
  • Do you want to make new friends while keeping active and making a difference to the environment?

What is involved

No prior experience is needed. All volunteers are supervised.

Activities include:

  • Outdoor activities such as seed collection across Calderdale.
  • Indoor activities such a seed sowing and weeding. This is within the polytunnels at Cromwell Bottom in Brighouse and Manor Heath in Halifax.

Most volunteering sessions are a half day and usually occur once or twice a week.

Once becoming a volunteer, you will be sent details by email weekly of all upcoming volunteering activities for these projects. Some volunteers attend every week, others every few months.
