Our vision is to make Calderdale a nationally recognised centre of cycling excellence. Where residents, visitors and tourists of all ages and abilities can safely cycle for utility, commuting, leisure and sporting pursuits.
To do this, we will offer residents the chance to store bikes safely and conveniently.
Cycle Hangars

These take up only half a car parking space and can store up to six standard bikes. This makes them an efficient and cost-effective option to parking a car.
Where and when they will be placed
- Mytholmroyd (Autumn 2024).
- Todmorden (2025/26).
Further hangars will be placed around the district. Where possible, they will be placed on the road so they are close to residential properties. This means more convenient access for residents. We may use greenspace if the hangar is really needed, and highway space is constrained.
How locations are decided
We will consider various things, but locations will be chosen mainly on the level of demand in an area.
When you register your interest, it will allow us to see where there is a demand for them. This helps us to place them in places that work for everyone.
How we allocate them
We use a scoring system that will prioritise residents in most need of a space, which considers factors such as:
- current storage options;
- and the type of home you live in.
Demand for cycle hangars
There is strong and growing demand for secure residential cycle storage in the borough. To date, approximately 90 residents have registered their interest in having access to a cycle hangar near their home. This figure continues to rise as awareness increases. More residents are seeking secure, weather-protected alternatives to storing bicycles indoors or on the street.
The demand reflects wider trends in active travel. It highlights the need for investment in secure infrastructure that supports cycling as a practical and safe mode of transport. Particularly for residents in flats or terraced housing with limited storage space.
Funding for new cycle hangars
Cycle hangars can be funded or part-funded through a variety of sources, including:
- Grants from Active Travel England.
- Town or Parish Councils.
- Developer contributions (e.g. Section 106 agreements).
- Revenue from user charges or annual fees.
In many cases, funding is ring-fenced specifically for Active Travel improvements. This ensures that it directly supports walking, cycling, and other sustainable transport initiatives.
Cycle hangar security
The cycle hangars used in Calderdale - manufactured by Cyclehoop - are recognised as secure storage. They are accredited by the Official Police Security Initiative (Secured by Design). They feature a fail-secure locking mechanism.
The hangars have been tested by Sold Secure, the UK’s leading certification body for security products. They have achieved Diamond accreditation, which is awarded to products offering the highest level of protection against theft.
