Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Information

Find out about EV charging points in Calderdale.

We continue to develop a network of public charging points to encourage the use of EVs in Calderdale. This will help support our climate change and air quality objectives to achieve our carbon net zero target by 2038.

We want to:

  • create a healthier, greener and cleaner environment.
  • encourage the use of EVs over petrol or diesel ones.

Low emissions vehicles, such as electric cars will help with our aims to.

  • Cut air pollution and CO2 emissions from road transport as they emit zero exhaust emissions.
  • Reduce noise pollution as they are quieter to run.

Funds for charge points has been awarded by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV)

We are working with West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) on the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Project. This will see more charge points in Calderdale over the next few years.

Types of chargers

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) provides funds to support the use of electric vehicles.

Rapid chargers (GeniePoint)

OZEV funds were used to help the uptake of Ultra Low Emissions Vehicles (ULEV) taxis.

  • In 2020, 10 chargers installed.
  • Each point can charge two vehicles at the same time (24/7).
  • Taxis/Private Hire vehicles can use both bays.
  • The public can only use the non-taxi bay.
  • Takes under one hour to give around 80% charge.

Fast chargers (Blink)

OZEV funds were used for the On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS) and to install 13 Blink chargepoints.

  • The public can use these bays (24/7).
  • Takes 4 - 6 hours for a full charge.

Please note: You must create an account via the operator's website or app. To download the app, visit:

Enforcement of electric vehicle charging bays

Our Civil Enforcement Officers (CEOs) will enforce the use of the bays where there is a:

  • Traffic Regulation Order (TRO);
  • or Parking Places Order (PPO) in force.

A Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) will be issued to:

  • vehicles not classified as an electric taxi that are parked in taxi only bays.
  • any vehicle parked or waiting in an electric vehicle charging bay, but not actively charging.

Currently, if actively charging, you do not need a ticket or an active cashless session in place.

Charging your EV on the highway outside your home

  • We do not permit the installation of cable channels or gullies in the footway.
  • Cables for charging vehicles cannot be trailed across the footway.

This is in line with the Highways Act 1980 section 178 clause (1).

We are working with the WYCA to review this and other on-street charging solutions.

We are drafting a policy to support the development of our EVCP infrastructure. Until that time public charge points can be used.
