Brighouse Town Centre Improvements

Calderdale Council are delivering a regeneration project with funding from the Governments Town Deal scheme.

Proposed scheme

Improvements include new road and pavement surfaces, landscaping, and new seating and lighting - putting the focus on people rather than vehicles and creating a place where more people can visit, shop, and spend time in the town.

Part of the improvements involve changing the way traffic moves around the town centre to ensure easy access to shops, businesses, and venues, providing a safer, more welcoming town centre for pedestrians.

Some of the proposed changes in the town centre require new or amended Traffic Regulation Orders, these are the legal documents required to enable enforcement of the new traffic/parking restrictions.

In summary the main proposed changes are:-

  • Motor vehicles will be prohibited from using some streets (except for daily loading between 4pm to 10am). These lengths of road will effectively become pedestrian areas during the daytime between 10am and 4pm. This involves: -
    • Bethel Street (between Park Street and Market Street),
    • Commercial Street (between Market Street and Park Street)
    • All of West Park Street.
  • Access to Canal Street and Ship Street from Bethel Street car park will be restricted to access only, i.e. deliveries or direct property access. General through traffic will not be permitted.
  • Goods vehicles over 7.5T will be banned from the majority of the town centre.
  • Existing parking, loading and disabled parking spaces will be revised throughout the town centre.
  • Pay and display charges will be extended to all days, 8am-8pm, following a recent parking review.
  • Waiting and loading will only be permitted in designated bays.
  • Church Lane (section between Gooder Lane/Commercial Street) and Canal Street will be closed to through traffic, vehicular access to premises will be maintained.
  • The current one-way flow of traffic on West Park Street, Thornton Square (in front of the Old Town Hall) and Ship Street will be reversed and will now be east to west.
  • The current two-way flow of traffic on West Park Street will become one-way, east to west.
  • Cycling will be allowed in both directions of the one-way section of Bradford Road between Huddersfield Road and King Street.
  • Additional Pay & Display parking will be introduced on Gooder Street, Lawson Road, and Wakefield Road (Lawson Road to Huddersfield Road stub).
  • Park Row will become ‘loading only’ all days, between 8am and 8pm.
  • Further ‘no loading’ restrictions around the junction of Gooder Street and Commercial Street, and King Street/Wakefield Road/Lawson Road junction.
  • The ‘no waiting’ restrictions on Clifton Road will be extended to all days, 8am – 8pm.
