We operate a free commercial vehicle permit scheme for all our HWRCs.
Vehicles that need this permit
- Vehicles without rear passenger seats and/or rear windows.
- Flat-backs, which includes 4x4 pickups with a flat back and/or a crew cab.
- Pickups.
- Vehicles with more than two axles.
- Box or Luton-style vans.
- Twin-axle trailers up to 3m in length. (This includes all parts of the trailer chassis and fixtures.)
- Hire vans.
- Cars that are not able to fit under the height barrier.
Using a hire vehicle
Please note: You cannot get a permit for these.
To visit a HWRC with one, you must bring:
- The vehicle hire agreement.
- Proof that you live in Calderdale, such as:
- driving licence;
- utility bill less than 3 months old;
- Council Tax Bill;
- or any other ID with your address on.
Vehicles that do not need this permit
- Cars;
- 4x4s
- people carriers.
- Any of the above with or without a standard camping-size trailer - 6'x4'.
Note: The above vehicles need a Resident Permit.
What is not admitted
- Trailers longer than 3 metres. (This includes all parts of the trailer chassis and fixtures.)
- Trailers with more than two axles.
- Vehicles plated more than 3,500 GVW.
- Pedestrians.
Types of permit
There are three types and all are free of charge:
Recycling permit
- Valid for unlimited visits for 12 months.
- Allows for the disposal of recyclable items at no charge, at a chosen Household Waste Recycling Centre in Calderdale.
Permit for items that cannot be recycled
- Valid for one year or six trips, whichever is sooner.
- Allows items to be disposed of (free of charge) at a Calderdale HWRC you choose.
Note: You cannot renew this permit before the expiry date, even if the six trips have been used.
Single visit permit
- Valid for one calendar month from the issue date.
- Allows for one visit to a specified Calderdale HWRC.
Note: Only items stated on the permit can be brought. This can be a fridge, freezer, furniture or a bulky household item.
How to apply
You can only apply by going to Halifax or Todmorden (Eastwood) Household Waste Recycling Centres.
You must bring:
- Your vehicle registration document (or vehicle hire agreement).
- A utility bill to show you live in Calderdale that is no more than 3 months old.
- Your driving licence, which must be valid.
Note: You can only apply between Monday and Friday and in person only.
Please apply before you want to use it, as there can be delays when issuing permits.
Important note: We reserve the right to inspect your waste before we accept it.
Trade waste
Never.
We are not licensed to accept waste from commercial/business activities or trade waste.
Note: This type of waste can be deposited at: Halifax TLS, Lee Bank, Ovenden Road, Halifax. HX3 5PN. (Charges will apply).
