Some countries may need a 'Certificate of No Impediment (CNI)' for your marriage ceremony or civil partnership formation. To get this, you must give notice to the register office in the district where you live.
To find out what you need to do, it is important to consult with the local authority where you:
- plan to marry;
- or form a civil partnership.
For more details, please visit: Getting married or registering a civil partnership abroad (GOV.UK).
Before you book you must know:
- Exactly how the name of your ceremony venue should be recorded on your notice.
- How long the CNI will be valid in the country where you intend to have your ceremony.
Important notes:
- If you change any details after your appointment, you must give a new notice and pay the fee again.
- We can only take notice for a CNI if you are over 18 and a British citizen.
There are certain documents that you must produce at the appointment. For details of these, please see: Giving Notice.
For details of our charges to give notice, please see: Fees.
