Air Quality - Management Areas (AQMA) and reports

Find information about Calderdale's AQMAs and view our air quality reports here.

Our AQMAs have been declared because the annual average level of nitrogen dioxide is more than the target.

  • This pollutant is related to the combustion of fossil fuels, which includes vehicle engines.
  • For those we have declared, these are often present:
    • high traffic volumes;
    • and buildings close to the road that can hinder exhaust fumes from being dispersed.

We made an action plan that shows the steps we will try to take to reduce levels of nitrogen dioxide. This plan is due to be revised.

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) includes the principle that:

  • All new development should be sustainable and not greatly affect or be affected by air pollution.
  • This includes the impact of traffic.

The NPPF makes more specific requirements for developments within AQMAs and to meet certain European air quality targets.

We work with other West Yorkshire Local Authorities to make common guidance for developers to meet current and new concerns.

AQMAs we have declared

After compliance in Luddendenfoot (five years) and Stump Cross (six years), we will revoke AQMAs 4 and 5 (summer 2025). We will still monitor these areas going forward. Defra agreed that they could be revoked without a detailed assessment.

Air quality reports

We monitor air pollution across the Borough. The most concern to us is nitrogen dioxide, which is mainly linked to road traffic.

The reports below discuss and assess the pollutants. Assessments (to update and screen) consider the situation across Calderdale and show where we need to investigate more.

  • Detailed Assessments refer to specific investigations, such as areas highlighted in updating and screening assessments.
  • Progress Reports provide annual reviews of our monitoring results.
