What happens to stray dogs
Holding period
They are held for eight days at private kennels.
Rehomed or euthanised
If the owner does not claim the dog within eight days, then ownership of the dog transfers to the kennels.
They will try to find the dog a new home, often via a rehoming organisation.
There are times, usually when aggression is shown by the dog, that they may have to be euthanised.
Keeping a stray dog
Contact the Council
If you want to keep the dog, you must still contact us first.
Risk of theft
If you keep a stray dog and do not contact us, you could be accused of theft.
Relevant legislation
- Environmental Protection Act 1990. This act sets out the provisions and duties of local authorities when they seize and deal with stray dogs.
- Environmental Protection (Stray Dogs) Regulations 1992. These regulations implement provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 with regard to stray dogs.
Microchipping
Since 2015, in the UK it has been compulsory to microchip dogs.
Collar and tag
By law, when your dog is outside (except in limited circumstances) it is required to wear a collar. This must have:
- the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar;
- or on a plate or badge attached to it.
Injured stray dogs
What to do if you find a stray dog which is injured
The Council will fund initial emergency treatment to any vet to the sum of £200. This money is used to cover things like accommodation, fluids, pain relief etc. It is not to cover ongoing medical treatment such as x rays or operations.
Please note: This cost would be re-charged to the dog's owner if they are located.
