We do this every year for all households in Calderdale. It is to check that the information on the Electoral Register is up to date. We must do this by law.
Between September and November, look out for letters, calls and visits from us.
- You must be on the Electoral Register to vote in elections.
- It can also help if you want to get credit for things like a mortgage or bank loan.
Important note: If you pay Council Tax, it does not mean that you are on the Electoral Register.
To start the canvass, we compare names and addresses on the register with the information held by:
- The Department of Work and Pensions;
- and our Council Tax records.
How we contact you and what you must do depends on this.
If you get an A4 letter
We will send these out at the end of August. This will tell you if you must respond or not.
- It will state the current names on the Electoral Register at the address.
- If your letter says you must respond, whether any changes are needed or not, visit: Response to canvass letter.
Note: Do not forget to add anyone aged 16 or 17. (They can vote when they are 18.)
You do not need to do anything if:
- your letter says you do not need to respond;
- and the details are correct. (All people named still live there and you do not need to add or remove anyone.)
If any details are wrong, please let us know, visit: Response to canvass letter. (Here you can add, remove or change names.)
If you get an A3 letter
This is our four page Canvass Form.
Where all residents do not match on our check, we will send you a canvass form. This will be pre-printed with the latest details that we hold.
Note: If you get this form, you must respond, even if there are no changes.
- To confirm the information is correct or make changes, visit: Response to canvass letter.
- You can also use the paper Canvass Form to write changes on or confirm no changes. Then post it back to us in the reply envelope.
If you add a person's name to the canvass form, it does not mean they are registered to vote.
- If someone added is eligible to vote, they must register, visit: Register to vote (GOV.UK).
- If they do not register online, we will send a form by email or post.
If you do not respond when you must
Either or both of these may happen:
- We will call you to confirm details if we have your phone number.
- One of our canvassers will visit your property in October.
Please note: If we still do not get a response, you can be:
- Removed from the register;
- and fined up to £1,000.
Once the canvass is finished
We will publish the revised Electoral Register on 1st December 2024.
