If you apply for Council or NHS jobs
It takes much longer to apply for these jobs. Firstly, take a look at the job description and the person specification. These will list the skills that they describe as essential (you need most of these) and desirable.
You will increase your chances of getting an interview, if you:
- Show you have all the specific skills they ask for;
- and give examples for each of them.
So, if a job spec asks for customer service skills, give an example of how you helped someone. This can be from your current or a previous post. They will interview people who can show they have all the skills asked for.
Search strategy
- Decide what jobs you want to do.
- Find the best keywords/phrases to find the job you want. For example driver, warehouse, sales, retail, customer service. If you get no results then try a different word to describe the job. Do not be too specific, you may not see the full list of jobs.
- Decide how far you can travel. Job sites allow you to state how many miles you can travel to a job.
- Always try to include a cover letter to show off any skills relevant to the job. It does not need to be long. We can help you with this.
