Electronic health needs assessment (eHNA)

The electronic health needs assessment (eHNA survey) obtains an overview of the health and well-being of children and young people in Calderdale.

The electronic health needs assessment (eHNA survey) obtains an overview of the health and well-being of children and young people in Calderdale. This enables us to commission and deliver future programmes and initiatives which aim to address health and well-being issues. It is also a chance for young people in Years 5, 6, 7 and 10 to have their say on topics and issues they face in everyday life.

The survey is carried out on behalf of the Director of Public Health and Director of Children and Young People's Service. This is with the agreement of representatives of Calderdale Association of Secondary Head teachers, Primary Head teachers and Calderdale Governors’ Association.

What is it?

The eHNA is an anonymous 30 minute online survey, completed during the summer term. It is held in a supervised classroom environment for all years. The questions for primary school pupils have been adapted to be age and understanding appropriate.

Since 2010, sufficient secondary schools participated to provide a representative sample for that age group. In 2012 and 2013 a pilot for primary schools ran and in 2014 an adequate number of primary schools in Calderdale participated to enable us to make comparisons and trends between the years.

The benefits

Children and young people’s feedback is extremely valuable, both for each individual school as it is information from your pupils about your pupils and for Calderdale Council. It helps us and you work out what works and what doesn’t. It helps us to focus on those who need our help, and to ensure we are doing our best to support them at school, home or wherever they are.

The survey, its results, and support are all funded through the Local Authority Public Health Team and the outcomes cover three areas:

  • encouraging healthy behaviours
  • avoiding harms
  • developing resilience through improved emotional health and well-being.

These should help schools achieve some of their OFSTED requirements, in particular Leadership and Management, along with personal development, behaviour and welfare and support schools with the delivery of their PSHE curriculum.

Reports and analysis

Please contact Becky Greenwood, the Public Health in Schools co-ordinator, to support you in creating a bespoke health and well-being action plan using your results from the survey. Your school level report will be sent within 2 working days of completion of the survey, when you send a confirmation email to healthyfutures@calderdale.gov.uk. You will receive an all schools comparison report a week after closure of the survey. The new spine and trend charts will be sent out in September and the Key themes report will be available by the end of October.
