Shop assistant and driver’s mate volunteers with Overgate Hospice

Keen and motivated people wanted to help maintain the efficient running of our charity shops around Calderdale.

Help us to raise vital funds for Overgate Hospice.

This is an exciting and rewarding chance to meet new people, work and learn about the voluntary sector.

Overgate Hospice operates a strict no smoking policy, which includes the use of e-cigarettes. Volunteers must also comply with the Hospice's alcohol and substance misuse policy.

The job

Please note: There is a three month settling in period.

Hours

  • Weekly morning or afternoon session. (Some shops open 7 days a week.)

Report to

  • Shop manager; sales assistants and drivers (if applicable).

Training

Full training given:

  • Induction includes a 30 minute YouTube video and supporting paper.
  • Safe moving and handling via a two minute YouTube video.

Also supported by the Area Manager; Head of Retail; Retail Coordinators and Volunteer Services Team.

The work

Please note: Shop assistant volunteers must be at least 14 years old, which includes Duke of Edinburgh students.

For all shops:

  • Answer customer queries, both face-to-face and over the phone.
  • Promote Gift Aid.
  • Accept and sort donations.
  • Identify items to be sold via online auction.
  • Steam or iron clothing to remove creases (not furniture shop).
  • Price up/ticket items and date items to aid stock rotation.
  • Display goods, window dress and restock shelves.
  • Stock rotation.
  • Handle cash and up.
  • Use tills (training will be provided).
  • Process returns.
  • Help to keep the shop floor and back areas clean, tidy and organised.
  • Promote Hospice events.

For furniture shop only:

  • Lift heavy furniture.
  • Build/dismantle furniture.
  • Drive the van/driver's mate.
  • Collect/deliver furniture.

Note: Volunteer badge must be worn at all times.

What we are looking for

  • An ambassador to represent the Hospice in a positive manner.
  • Is respectful to all customers, volunteers and staff, sensitive to people and situations.
  • Understands the importance of being confidential.
  • A team worker, assisting with all the tasks.
  • Reliable, committed and punctual.
  • Volunteers must operate within Overgate Hospice's policies and guidelines.
  • Volunteers will be medically fit to undertake the role and inform the shop manager/Volunteer Services Team of any changes.

Skills and experience

  • Customer service.
  • Communication and people skills, to easily build a rapport with customers.
  • Flexible, able and willing to do a variety of jobs.
  • Uses initiative and can identify jobs that need doing.
  • Basic numeracy skills.
