We provide grit bins or salt piles on roads that are not on gritting routes, where they meet the criteria. People may use these on public roads and pavements in snow or icy conditions.
We check and replenish all grit bins in November and monitor salt levels through the winter. After a spell of severe weather, we will do a bulk refill. However, we cannot refill bins on request due to the costs involved.
Very little salt, a tablespoon per square metre is needed to clear ice. Please note: Snow must be cleared first for the salt to work.
We assess roads removed from gritting routes and provide one or more grit bins if the criteria is met.
To find out what the criteria is, please see: Gritting infographic (PDF).
