As severe gales approach, the Met Office will issue a UK: Severe weather warning.
Be prepared
Before winter arrives, clear gutters of leaves and debris to prevent overflowing and flooding. Make sure you have access to candles or a wind up torch.
If a severe weather warning for high wind has been issued:
- Secure loose objects such as garden furniture that could be blown into windows or cause further damage.
- Secure windows and doors of your home and outbuildings.
- Park vehicles in a garage: otherwise, park them away from trees, walls or fences.
- Bring pets indoors.
- Check elderly or vulnerable neighbours. (Are they are aware of and prepared for the potential weather problems?)
- Monitor weather warnings on the TV, radio or online.
During and after severe gales
Stay indoors where possible until gales pass.
Do not drive unless your journey is necessary. If driving take care on exposed routes such as bridges or high level roads, delay your journey or find alternative routes if possible. Slow down and be aware of side winds, particular care should be taken if you are towing or you are in a high sided vehicle.
After the storm has passed:
- Check for damage and try to make your property as safe as possible. Beware of fallen cables, weakened trees and loose masonry.
- Check neighbours are safe and well.
- If you have lost electricity, contact your supplier to establish when it is likely to be restored.
Support from the Council
During and following severe weather the Council will endeavour to carry out the following actions where necessary:
- Assist and support emergency services.
- Check vulnerable buildings undergoing extensive structural work.
- Provide advice to emergency services in relation to making buildings safe.
- In event of utility failure, check vulnerable people.
- Remove debris from highways.
- Close roads where necessary.
