We need to use land in the Borough in a sustainable way, as it is crucial:
- for wildlife;
- to capture carbon to tackle climate change;
- and to protect us from floods by slowing the flow of water from the hillsides during heavy rain.
Access to open spaces also helps people who live, work and study here by connecting them with nature.
We only own a small amount of land, but we work with other landowners to improve land use. Our aim is to protect and restore habitats from the moor tops to the valley bottoms, like:
- peatlands;
- grasslands;
- woodlands;
- and waterways.
What we focus on:
- Restore nature to our landscapes and make space for nature in our towns.
- Increase access to green spaces helps make our communities better and more sustainable.
To support this, we helped to start the Wilder Calderdale partnership.
Our goal is to protect and improve at least 30% of Calderdale's land and water for nature by 2030.
You can read our plan to achieve this, see: Calderdale Ecological Emergency Action Plan – In Short.
We commit to conserve and restore local nature. By working together, we aim to improve our landscapes for nature, the climate and people.
