Physical activity

Only 53% of Calderdale's adults are achieving the Chief Medical Officer's (CMO) recommended levels of moderate intensity physical activity. This is 150 minutes per week. For more details, visit: Percentage of physically active and inactive adults - active adults .

Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality and accounts for 6% of deaths. People who have a physically active lifestyle have a 20-35% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease and stroke. Regular physical activity is also associated with a reduced risk of:

  • diabetes;
  • obesity;
  • osteoporosis;
  • colon/breast cancer;
  • and improved mental health.

In older adults, physical activity is associated with increased functional capacities. The estimated direct cost of physical inactivity to the NHS across the UK is over £1.6 billion per year.

The CMO currently recommends that adults do 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate activity per week. This should be done in bouts of 10 minutes or more. The overall amount of activity is more important than the type, intensity or frequency.

Sport England has developed 19 sporting segments to understand the nation's attitudes and motivations. Why they play sport and why they do not. The segments provide the knowledge to influence people to take part. Each segment can be explored at differing geographic levels. It is possible to find out what people's sporting habits are in a particular street, community, local authority or region.

The below table shows each of the segments and is ranked by:

  • those most likely to be found in the selected area down;
  • to those least likely to be found with the proportion of the population that they represent in that area given.

Please note: This is the 2010 data.

Projected future need

We currently do not have enough trend information to project future levels of physical activity.

However, the adult population is expected to increase by around 15,000 in the next 10 years. This will have implications for the level of sports provision in Calderdale.

Key considerations linked to the known evidence base (what works?)

In 2015, International Business Machines (IBM) visited, which included a consultation with various stakeholders on physical activity. Calderdale will advance the work began with IBM to make Calderdale the most physically active borough in England. This focuses on four key areas:

  • Assets / neighbourhoods;
  • Digital;
  • Workplace;
  • and Communications.

These are the four key areas that will underpin our approach to make the Better Living Movement (BLM) a reality.
