- There are thought to be about 175,000 young carers in Britain, but there are probably more.
- In Calderdale, there are around 1,500.
- Last year, our Young Carers Service was in contact with over 220 young carers. Most of these were girls (60%) and:
- most cared for a parent (often the mother);
- some cared for a brother or sister.
- Most adults with care needs have a mental health problem. It is estimated that there are up to 30 young carers on roll in a typical secondary school. A number of these are likely to have problems with some part of their education.
