Education Welfare Service

This service liaises between home/school and parents/local authority to help resolve any school attendance matters.

This service works with all schools.

What we do

  • Advise on a range of attendance and welfare issues to improve school attendance.
  • Work with all schools in Calderdale and recommend actions on a range of issues that impact attendance.
  • Offer advice and guidance to support parents to:
    • improve their child's attendance;
    • and to remove any barriers that affect regular school attendance.
  • Encourage parents to discuss issues with the school in the first instance. In some cases, the service will:
    • facilitate a meeting between a school and the parent(s);
    • and liaise as needed to resolve any issues.
  • Signpost support services, which includes Calderdale Emotional Health and Wellbeing Services and the Early Help Pathway.

Allocated Education Welfare Officer

All schools have one of these. They work with school staff to support dialogue that involves parents, pupils and other services. This is to help pupils:

  • Attend school on a regular basis.
  • Behave in line with the school's behaviour for learning policy.
  • Contribute in a positive and beneficial way to the school community.
  • Achieve their academic potential and promote positive wellbeing.
