Applying for a temporary market licence

The procedure and charges for obtaining a temporary market licence.

The council can grant a temporary market licence for charitable/fundraising purposes.

To get a licence you must apply and detail your event (at least six weeks before the event). Please note: Refer to the guidance and conditions for consent to help you to complete your application.

If your event is not classed as a market, you will not need consent and will not be charged.

Waiver of markets rights:

  • 25 sellers or less: £25.
  • 26 to 50 (maximum) sellers: £1 per car for each seller extra.

The licence issued to operate an occasional temporary market in no way gives the Council's endorsement to:

  • How suitable the intended site is;
  • or the ability of the applicant to operate an event.

Please note: Applicants must comply with all statutory and other legal requirements, both civil and criminal. In particular, those relating to:

  • consumer goods and services;
  • food safety;
  • health and safety;
  • traffic control;
  • fire safety;
  • planning consents;
  • and Sunday trading.
