Grants to voluntary organisations

Here you can find out about how we are committed to supporting the voluntary and community sector.

We are committed to supporting the voluntary and community sector. We recognise that groups in this sector play an important role in tackling the challenges facing our communities. By working with them, we can make a real difference for Calderdale's people.

We commission the sector to deliver services across all areas of service delivery. Voluntary sector groups are important providers in health and social care, services for young people and families. They are also important in projects around the environment and economic development.

To this end, we will launch two new strategic grants streams for the voluntary sector.

These grants have been agreed to fund key programmes of work to support Stronger Neighbourhoods and Advice & Tackling Poverty. They replace grant schemes that have supported community organisations working in these areas between 2018 and 2021.

The new grants schemes have been revised to reflect the:

  • New Stronger Neighbourhoods objectives and priorities.
  • Calderdale Poverty Action Plan of the Regeneration & Strategy Directorate.
  • Our new Vision to be the Best Borough in the North.

These were agreed, along with the overall structure of the programme and included priorities and grant funding allocations by Cabinet. For more details, please see: Minutes of the meeting of Cabinet held on 9th November 2020.

For details on how to apply, please see: Stronger Neighbourhoods Grants and Advice and Anti Poverty Grants.

The Council provides grants and other assistance directly to charities and groups across the Borough. This helps with projects for planting trees to supporting victims of domestic violence. The Council funds voluntary and community organisations across Calderdale, supporting organisations to develop and attract volunteers. We help to make sure the voluntary sector has a voice in wider decisions. This is via consultation, partnership and engagement or voluntary organisations being representatives for the sector itself.

Grants to Voluntary Organisations aim to support the contribution of the voluntary and community sector in Calderdale. The main ways we try to do this are, we:

  • Fund a programme of work within the voluntary sector that supports the Council. This helps to achieve its vision to be the 'Best Borough in the North'. More specifically, achieves the priorities of the Communities directorate, which are to:
    • Support infrastructure services for a thriving voluntary sector. This includes promoting community action and volunteering.
    • Support advice services. This includes giving people access to information and advice on:
      • Benefits services;
      • financial inclusion;
      • and issues affecting their health and well-being.
    • Deliver a Local Healthwatch which address the three key functions. These are influencing, signposting of health and social care provision and advocacy to support people with NHS complaints.
    • Support the cultural objectives of the Council as set out here.
    • Support universal and preventative projects that help develop the Stronger Neighbourhoods objectives as set out here.
  • Administer the Discretionary rate relief scheme.
  • Lead on partnerships associated with this funding.
  • Support initiatives that affect the voluntary and community sector.
