The Council established Town Development Boards to help regenerate Calderdale's town centres. These bring together Councillors, local business and the voluntary/community sectors. They take a strategic view of the needs and opportunities of the local area.
- In March 2017, the Board was set up for Brighouse.
- In September 2019, the Government announced a £3.6bn Towns Fund to support 101 Town Deals across England.
- The Brighouse bid was successful and secured £19.1 million to regenerate the town centre.
In July 2020, we became the Brighouse Town Deal Board to bring forward the new programme. Our aim is to build on this success and seek more investment to support the regeneration of Brighouse.
In December 2022, this started with projects that include:
- Market revitalisation. This will see the redevelopment and modernisation of Brighouse's market. It will act as a catalyst for a wider investment in the town centre.
- Retail and Leisure. Invest in the town's public realm and introduce pedestrian areas to encourage shopping and leisure activities.
- Welcome. Improve the public realm to create a more positive welcome to the town centre.
- Canalside. Public realm improvements alongside the canal and at Thornton Square.
- Industry 4.0. Invest in cutting edge technology to support high-skilled apprenticeships.
Our vision
Brighouse will be a thriving market town that capitalises on its:
- Unique landscape.
- Environment.
- Renowned community activism and enterprising spirit.
It will have a strong visitor economy and be a beacon for:
- Social and environmental enterprise.
- Creative industries.
- Healthy living.
The vision is underpinned by three cross-cutting themes:
- Health and well-being. To optimise the health and well-being of people in Brighouse throughout the course of their lives.
- Inclusive growth. To help local people develop new skills, and secure more and better quality jobs. This will lead to an increase in household incomes and an economy where everyone benefits.
- Creating a sustainable future. Resilient people and communities that live in a healthy environment. While also making sure that growth is clean to be net zero carbon by 2038.
