In all cases, we will always try to stop you from being homeless where possible. This may mean speaking to your landlord or family or friends to see if mediation or advice can help. We always prefer that you contact us as soon as you think you are at risk of becoming homeless. This gives us more chance to work with you to find a solution.
We know it is not always possible to stop everyone from becoming homeless. If you become homeless and face being on the street:
- anyone can contact us to ask for their situation to be assessed under the Homelessness Reduction Act.
In some cases, after an interview, we will decide that we have a duty to offer temporary accommodation.
- This is when it is decided that you have a Priority Need and we are satisfied you are homeless.
- Temporary accommodation will be found that day if there are no other options, like:
- staying with friends or family;
- or going back to where you were staying.
In most cases, there is no duty on us to provide accommodation, even if you are homeless that day. This is called Non-Priority under Homelessness Law in England. We still have a duty to anyone who is eligible to provide advice and assistance on how to find accommodation. Referrals can be made to:
- schemes that provide accommodation in Calderdale;
- or to hostels in other areas.
Please note: There is no guarantee somewhere will be found the same day.
A named person will work with you to help you find somewhere to stay if you are classed as:
- homeless;
- or at risk of becoming homeless.
