Course description
This course is for learners who want to get better at English in an encouraging environment, where you’ll be supported every step of the way. There are no exams, just plenty of opportunities to build confidence and see progress at your own pace.
At the level that’s right for you, you will:
- Improve your reading and spelling by working on phonics, recognising patterns and sounds in words to help with accurate spelling.
- Learn to spell both common and more complex words, boosting your written confidence and ability to communicate clearly.
- Build the skills to check your own writing, spotting and correcting mistakes in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Discover strategies for reading comprehension, using headings, images, and layout to find key information in texts.
- Take part in speaking, listening, and discussion activities, building your confidence and communication skills in real-life situations.
- Track your own progress and gain greater independence, applying your new skills at home, at work, and in the community.
This course is open to learners from Entry Level 1 to Level 2, with tailored support to suit your needs and help you progress. Whether you’re looking to improve your everyday English or get ready for further learning, you’ll be part of a supportive, inclusive group that’s focused on your success and self-improvement.
Course level
First Step - These courses are for complete beginners. You don't need to have studied the subject before or have any previous knowledge.
Next Step - The aim of these courses is to take your learning and confidence to the next stage. You will learn more about applying your skills further and delve deeper into the subject. For learners who have completed the First Step course.
Who is this course for?
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ who are not yet ready to sit an exam, or have been out of education for a while, and want to build up basic knowledge and skills.
First Step – The start of your learning journey. Explore how you can build your confidence, connect with others, and learn new skills to start achieving your goals.
Next Step – Take your learning and confidence to the next stage. Delve deeper into the skills and techniques you explored in the First Step course and make informed decisions about your own progression.
What do I need to bring?
You will use Google Classroom throughout your course to view work from your lessons, receive messages from your tutor, and access online resources. You can access this on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop/computer. Your tutor will support you to log-in during your first lesson, and the Learner Support team is always on hand to help with any issues.
