Are you currently out of work or thinking about your next steps but not sure where to begin? This supportive and welcoming course is designed to help you build confidence and develop the key skills needed to move closer to employment.
Over 12 weeks, you’ll explore your strengths, learn how to write a CV, practice interview techniques, and gain confidence applying for jobs online. You’ll also improve essential workplace skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving – all in a relaxed and encouraging environment where everyone is supported to succeed.
You will:
- Set personal goals and build confidence in your abilities.
- Create or update your CV.
- Practice completing application forms and searching for jobs online.
- Take part in mock interviews and improve your speaking skills.
- Develop key workplace skills including time management and communication.
- Learn what employers are looking for and how to make a positive impression.
- Explore local job sectors and opportunities for further training.
- Connect with other learners, share ideas, and offer mutual support.
This course is ideal for anyone who has been out of work for a while or is looking to take the first steps towards employment. By the end, you’ll feel more prepared, motivated and ready to take your next step.
No previous experience is needed – just bring a willingness to learn and grow.

First Step - These courses are for complete beginners. You don't need to have studied the subject before or have any previous knowledge.
Who is this course for?
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ who want to gain knowledge and skills that will prepare them to enter voluntary work or employment.
First Step – The start of your learning journey. Explore how you can build your confidence, connect with others, and learn new skills to start achieving your goals.
What do I need to bring?
- Pen and paper.
You will use Google Classroom throughout your course to view work from your lessons, receive messages from your tutor, and access online resources. You can access this on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop/computer. Your tutor will support you to log-in during your first lesson, and the Learner Support team is always on hand to help with any issues.
