Course description
Get to know other people and interact with the community through cooking. Learn skills in the kitchen to become more independent and explore recipes you can cook for family and friends at home.
Take part in cooking activities in a welcoming and friendly environment, with like-minded learners and tutors who support you every step of the way. Build your confidence and learn new skills and knowledge that can be used to be more independent in everyday life.
You will:
- Meet other people with similar interests.
- Build confidence to talk to other learners about the meals you make.
- Learn how food can bring people together.
- Feel safe when in the kitchen.
- Improve dexterity, fine motor skills, and hand-eye coordination.
- Boost your self-esteem by making delicious meals.
- Feel comfortable making mistakes and learn how to correct them.
- Increase self-sufficiency by being able to cook for yourself.
- Be a part of inclusive social spaces where you can interact with others.
- Connect with other people through food and learn recipes you can take home to share with family and friends!

Next Step - The aim of these courses is to take your learning and confidence to the next stage. You will learn more about applying your skills further and delve deeper into the subject. For learners who have completed the First Step course.
Who is this course for?
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ with learning disabilities who want to meet new people and improve their independence while learning new skills at a pace that’s suitable for them.
Next Step – Take your learning and confidence to the next stage. Delve deeper into the skills and techniques you explored in the First Step course and make informed decisions about your own progression.
What do I need to bring?
You will use Google Classroom throughout your course to view work from your lessons, receive messages from your tutor, and access online resources. You can access this on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop/computer. Your tutor will support you to log-in during your first lesson, and the Learner Support team is always on hand to help with any issues.
