Course description
Get a hands-on introduction to South Asian cooking, with a focus on building confidence in the kitchen and strengthening community ties. Explore a variety of traditional dishes — from flavourful curries and spiced rice to street food snacks and celebration sweets — while learning about the cultural stories and customs behind them.
You will:
- Builds practical cooking skills and confidence by learning traditional dishes from Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, and Gujarati cuisines.
- Increase your independence through hands-on learning in meal preparation, spice use, and kitchen safety.
- Start living healthier by exploring nutritious recipes and alternative ingredients.
- Share recipes and cultural traditions with other learners in an inclusive environment.
- Strengthen communication and teamwork skills through collaborative cooking tasks and group discussions.
- Reduce any feelings of isolation by meeting new people and exploring shared cultural experiences, building friendships and social confidence.
- Take ownership of your learning through a final week cook-off, encouraging pride, creativity, and celebration.
- Gain the foundation skills and knowledge needed for volunteering or community participation through increased skills, confidence, and cultural exchange.

Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ who want to strengthen their role within their local community while learning and exploring new skills.

What do I need to bring?
You will use Google Classroom throughout your course to view work from your lessons, receive messages from your tutor, and access online resources. You can access this on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop/computer. Your tutor will support you to log-in during your first lesson, and the Learner Support team is always on hand to help with any issues.
