To put a skip on the public highway, you need a licence under the Highways Act 1980 (Section 139).
The skip company must apply at least 7 days before the skip is due to be delivered to a site.

Fees
- £32.50 for up to 14 days.
If you need a licence for longer, you must apply for a new one before the original licence expires.
Note:
- You do not need to pay 'up front' as we will invoice you each quarter.
- You must give the full invoice address and email address.
Conditions
- Our Inspector will monitor the skip on a regular basis.
- You may need to put safety lights and markings on or around the skip, such as:
- Reflective markings.
- Traffic cones.
- Night-time safety lamps.
- The name and phone number of the skip hire company.

To place a skip in a restricted parking bay, you must contact our Parking Services team:

Skip Operator Licences
To start a skip operator business, you must:
- Comply with the relevant laws (visit: Legislation on control of skips).
- Have the certificates/licences needed, such as:
- a Waste Carrier Licence (visit: Register or renew as a waste carrier or broker);
- and Public Liability Insurance.
