Operational Facilities Management

Makes sure buildings are operational, clean, safe and secure. This includes meeting all statutory and maintenance requirements.

Makes sure of value for money through:

  • workflow management;
  • quality assurance;

Markets Service

Markets Manager: John Walker

This service manages all indoor and outdoor markets in Calderdale. This is to ensure a vibrant, diverse offer to support our market town economies.

  • The multiple award winning and nationally acclaimed Markets Service manages all market activity across Calderdale.
  • The Markets are a nurturing ground for over 400 small businesses. These create over 500 jobs and play an important role in supporting the regeneration, employment and vitality of the townships and communities of the Borough.
  • The service boasts two award winning, historic and iconic Market Halls. The Halifax Borough Market and Todmorden Market Hall are located in the centre of their respective towns.
  • The service also operates and provides a large selection of retail offerings, bringing towns and communities to life on Open Markets at a number of venues, which include:
    • Todmorden, a 70 stall market delivering a range of choice across five days with its main visitor attraction being its unique Thursday Vintage, Antique and Collectables market.
    • Sowerby Bridge, a three-day market in the heart of the village.
    • The popular and award-winning Hebden Bridge Open Market plays a significant role within its community, operating different themes on each of its four operational days.
    • A longstanding charter market at Elland is held on Fridays with community based traders at its forefront.
    • More recently, Brighouse Market has been added to the portfolio, operating each Wednesday and Saturday and currently looking to expand to each Sunday.
  • Calderdale Markets Service also holds regulatory Market franchise rights on behalf of the Council for the operation of any type of market event throughout the district. These rights have been utilised proactively to increasingly support community organisations in delivering community and charitable fund raising events. These largely take the form of street markets, such as Halifax Food and Drink Festival, Halifax International Markets, Todmorden Food Festival, Brighouse Artisan markets and Ripponden Festival. They also create Totally Locally markets at Sowerby Bridge and extended operational hours with the newly introduced Foodie Friday at event at Todmorden.
