Climate Action Plan annual review - year two

Transport and getting around

Choosing to walk, cycle, use public transport, or cleaner cars helps to reduce carbon emissions. It also helps people to stay healthy and feel connected. We need to work together to create an environment in which greener travel can work for all.

Highlights

  • The Rural England Prosperity Fund provided support for local schemes. It funded POD car share to buy five hybrid cars and Pennine Cropshare to buy an electric delivery van.
  • The work we have done to share information and awareness with local partners has been very powerful.

Challenges

  • We need to strengthen lobbying efforts to make sure that communities get the transport services they need.
  • Accessing enough funding for green travel schemes remains a challenge.

How we are doing

Our priorities for next year

We will use Calderdale Council’s Active Network Study to inform local projects. We will also boost lobbying on important transport issues.

Case study: Beat the Street

In March, Active Calderdale turned the streets of North Halifax into a giant playground! The scheme was funded by Active Travel England and West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Players had to walk, cycle or wheel around, tapping their cards or app on ‘Beat Boxes’ placed around the area. The further they went, the more points they scored.

Across 4 weeks, 3,222 players took part, clocking up 19,211 active miles and jointly swiping Beat Boxes 72,705 times.
