Review of polling - Districts, Places and Stations

Find out about reviews in Calderdale.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England conducted an Electoral Review of Calderdale. In 2024, they concluded that Calderdale should be split into 18 Wards, with three Councillors elected to each Ward.

Parliament has approved these changes, which means we must hold a Polling District, Polling Places and Polling Stations Review. For this, each new ward will be split into Polling Districts and Polling Stations chosen to serve them.

What a Polling District is

This is a geographical area created by the subdivision of a UK Parliamentary constituency. Legislation requires each local community is a separate polling district. Where a local community is large, it can be divided into smaller polling districts to provide easy access.

What a Polling Place is

This is the building or area where polling stations will be selected by the (Acting) Returning Officer.

What a Polling Station is

This is a room or area within the polling place where voting takes place.

How we do reviews

The (Acting) Returning Officer is consulted on the current arrangements. They will then make representations on the existing buildings where Polling Stations are.

Aim of the review

To make sure that:

  • All electors in the constituency have such facilities for voting.
  • Polling Places are accessible to all electors.
  • When we designate a Polling Place, we take account of the needs of disabled people.

What we will review

  • Where a Polling Station is within each Polling District.
  • How accessible each Polling Station is.
  • What buildings could be used.
  • The Polling District boundaries within each ward of each constituency.

What we cannot review now

  • Ward boundaries.
  • Parish boundaries.
  • Parliamentary constituency boundaries.
